Write a review for the NetGear DG834G Wireless BT ADSL Modem/Router & Firewall 802.11g here!
Just buy it! It's cheap, simple to use and works first time. I suggest any problems mentioned below are down to other components / user error.
Thoroughly easy to set up. I haven't had chance to try out the 802.11 as yet. the firewall seems to work well, especially after the firmware upgrade to V1.03 I had no trouble doing this, personally. There are a few important instructions to follow when doing this, of course. It even looks rather nice for a piece of networking kit.
I cant believe people are having problems with this device. It is very easy to set up. easy to install, simple instructions, just plug it in.
You may need to spend a little bit more time encrypting the signal and pasword protecting your wireless connection but that is all. took me 30 mins to set all this up.(and thats only because I was putting in the wrong internet password!- quick call to them and all sorted)
BUY IT
Have bought several of these for myself/clients/family now and I think they're great (once they got to firmware 1.04). Easy to use, stay up (mine has only need to be rebooted once since march), allows VPN pass throughs, remote administration (with IP limitation so only I can do it), routes through the firewall etc and generally very nifty. Wireless is pretty good, I have one client using one on the 3rd floor of 5 and all floors have reasonable connections. Setting it up works fine but it took me a while to learn all the ins and outs of wireless conundrums (keep it away from the microwave, don't use a channel that the neighbours are using etc etc) so I can understand people getting frustrated. The new one (they have just updated the case I think) is very cute, smaller than the picture and white with funky stand. I like it, it works and does what I need it to.
Plugged it in, connected to the desktop using the 10/100 port, configured it as per the instructions. Switched on the laptop set it up with the encryption key and were off.
Just upgraded the firmware to 2. something and that went like a breeze.
Excellent piece of kit, no problems as yet (has only been a fortnight), worked straight out of the box with no messing about.
Bought Monday, Delivered Tuesday, out of the box, working with broadband within 5 minutes, working wireless with a squeezebox 2 10 mins, couldn't be simpler. Range for wireless covers all 3 floors of the house, brilliant.
I had a D-Link router before this one and couldn't get a decent range with the wireless or get Instant Messenger's video, audio, whiteboard or remote assistance to work - with this product it all works like a charm now!
Lots of great features, easy to install and manage. I would recommend this very time.
I purchased one in Jan 2004 and a year on I've had a very easy year with my BT broadband ADSL. I started on 512k and I'm now on 2MB and it's been glitch free. 5 wireless devices and 2 wired (3 XP, 1 2000, 1 IPAQ 2210 and 2 2003 servers) talk to the router with no issue using wpa-spk. I've had no problems with VPN either as I can connect to work every time and sync to my exchange server. All in all it's been a great piece of kit. I've installed (different ISPs) about 3 others at friends houses and again they've had trouble free internet access.
Brilliant piece of kit.
Great product. Easy to configure, was up and running within minutes. Found the interface very easy to use with plenty of user help. No problems with the connection, and the wireless side of things works great.
Used several of these with no real problems. It does seem to drop signals if used with 802.11b devices but if used with 802.11g I find this router excellent. Easy to setup.
I use non netgear USB network sticks if I need to get a system repair online, simply because I get them much cheaper and performance is excellent, so using matched netgear network cards should be a breeze.
Don't seem to have any problems with my ipaq (4150) dropping signals though and that is 802.11b.
On the whole a good piece of kit.
