Write a review for the NetGear DG834G Wireless BT ADSL Modem/Router & Firewall 802.11g here!
I've had lots of problems trying to set up routers in the past. No more! This is so easy to use, and it came with an added bonus.... I live about 100 meters from my university, and as the uni network is rubbish, I can pick up the signal from within uni and use it with the signal strength on 'good'. This is a fantastic product, well worth buying and so simple to set up!
A doddle to configure and some great features. Fast and efficient.
I bought this unit to replace my ageing USR ADSL modem which I have to reboot regularly. I can say that after plugging in this netgear unit, I am getting more than 3mb down whereas my old modem could only do 2mb down. I pay for a 4mb service in order to get higher up speeds and down has always been bad due to me being on the ADSL range limit. Haven't had to reboot once!
As an IT Manager i have installed approx 19 of these units now, mainly for friends or home workers.
The early large silver box versions had an issue with overheating and the main power capicitor would burst. But the new white small ones have got around this issue.
An absolute piece of cake to set up, very reliable. I would not use or recomend anything else.
Plus the VPN Pass Through really does work. Some manufacturers claim this feature but it does not always work. It Does work on the DG834.
Had this running for the past year, on all the time, with no problems. Easy to set up, never had any connection problems. Wireless it fine. Just upgraded to 2Mb and no problems. Configurations screens are easy to use. All in all a great little box.
I have to say I am a novice in networks. I am on AOL Silver and therfore do not provide support for networking systems so had to piece together information found on the net and from friends. I found the manual great in the hardware installation and setting up of the wireless connections, but not good when it comes to settings like MTU (which I found by chance and solved a lot of my problems). I had to find out about IP addresses, DHCP and DNS from a friend as was lost with using manual alone. AOL users having problems with accessing certain webpages be sure to set MTU to 1400. This can be found under Advanced > WAN Setup once you have logged onto the router with your PC. I had to disable WEP to get some of my wireless computers to be able to access internet. I am still looking into that one. Overall I am pleased now it is working. I would still have bought this router even aware of the little things you have to be aware. It can easily be set up in 5 minutes with the knowledge of the little fiddly bits (mainly affecting AOL users).
i install and set up small home or office networks now and then for people, i have used many different manufactures from belkin to 3com devices and without a dought this is one of the best i have yet set up, people that have problem with this device think that a router is just a device and some cable plug at the back and VIOLLAH..... you are sadly mistaken you need to either make some research yourself on which and what you need it for and how to set it up or just get a friend that knows how to do it "not people that claim they can do it" otherwise you might be stuck and frustrated with any wireless product especially if you keep it next to a high magnetic field like a TV, wireless home phone base unit, wireless head phones and so on, you need to know all the facts before you buy or even attempt to set any wireless device like a router in your household.
I purchased this item for the wireless connection to my sons laptop.I can only describe this as one of the easiest items of hard ware i have installed. Only one glitch. It fails to inform you that you have to assign an addtional number to each device you link too.
I have around 20 of these rolled out - never had 1 failure however... They have a habit of slowing down or dropping their connection after a while. To fix:- 1. Upgrade to the latest firmware 2. Reset to factory defaults using the reset pin in the back of the unit 3. Reprogram it and voila. Remember - If you ever flash upgrade always reset - NetGear doesn't mention this but it has solved a lot of problems for me!
Dead easy to configure. Now have an xbox,xbox360, laptop and pc linked up just got to watch my bandwidth usage!
Had mine for a year and a half now. There were a load of problems with computers using XP service pack 1, but once I had figured out that problem the thing has been rock solid. Its on nearly all the time and I share the connection with 5 people. Range seems good as well.
