Temperature Scanning

Reassure staff and visitors that their health and safety is your top priority

The temperature scanning system tells you people’s temperature as soon as they enter your building

When used along with other safety precautions, temperature scanning systems are a useful tool for a non-invasive, discreet, efficient, and immediate way to identify people who show a raised temperature.

The solution monitors and reports on the temperatures of people moving around your building in real-time. They’re useful as part of the initial stages of getting your people back into the office and means you to act quickly if there’s is an alert. If an alert should happen and a raised temperature is detected, then it should be processed as part of your own health and safety procedures and then confirmed with appropriate clinical methods.1

Our solution has an accuracy <0.2°C and meets all the requirements for relevant ISO Standards2. Research done at the time of the SARS crisis (2003) meant that these solutions were rigorously examined. It brought about the ISO Standards for both performance of the equipment and the approach to screening. Using a blackbody calibration reference our temperature screening solution can filter out the ambient temperature of the air temperature and the person it's scanning. This accounts for changes in temperature on hot or cold days.

Why BT?

BT has been working with UK Authorities for more than 25 years supplying specialist CCTV cameras and secure connectivity. We work with the best UK and European manufacturers to ensure the solutions we provide are fit for the purpose intended.

During the coronavirus pandemic, BT has played a vital role in supporting the NHS. As the building of the Nightingale hospital at London’s ExCel got underway within just 48 hours of being asked to help BT had installed 1000 IP Phones and the high-speed connectivity required, working with our infrastructure partner, Openreach. We want to do our bit to help and support those that need it during this unusual time.

How does temperature scanning work?

Once the solution has been set up at your workplace it will begin to scan people as they walk through the view of the camera. The human head has a variable temperature with lots of things that can affect the reading. The temperature scanning solution we offer measures temperature at the inner canthus (the inner corner of the eye socket near the tear duct) instead of using the forehead, as this most closely reflects in the inner body temperature. The systems combine thermal and colour visual imaging cameras along with a temperature calibration unit with proven software to produce high accuracy temperature measurement.

During the screening process, if a raised temperature is identified, this real-time information can notify those responsible for managing the appropriate response. Follow up procedures can be initiated to reduce the risk of further exposure to others.

This type of screening solution is particularly useful for organisations where employees must be present on-site and their role can’t be fulfilled remotely, such as:

  • Hospitals, clinics and A&E
  • Factories, warehouses and construction sites
  • Cold storage and food processing plants
  • Schools, colleges and universities
  • Military and government locations
  • Detention, prison services and courts
  • Sports clubs, gyms and leisure facilities
  • Retail outlets and shopping centres
  • Critical infrastructure facilities
  • Airports, arenas and stadiums

What will temperature scanning help me do?

Temperature scanning on a screen
  • Track facial temperature in real-time for one or more people, with high and warning level on-screen visible and audible alarms
  • Display visible and thermal images at the same time and automatically save them on alarm
  • Exclude high (non-human) temperatures to avoid false alarms
  • Ensure secure operation with setup and operator passwords
  • Define monitoring regions with exclusion areas to avoid fixed thermal artefacts (e.g. radiators/A/C vent/lighting)
  • Review images in the gallery and refer to related historical data for system audit
  • Select options to save or auto-delete images to provide GDPR/Privacy compliance

Key features of the temperature scanning solution:

  • High footfall, multi target auto tracking system
  • Accurate to +/- 0.2oC
  • Low cost
  • Quick and easy to install, operate and re-locate
  • Simultaneous thermal and colour images
  • Read temperatures for targets with or without eyewear
  • Minimal training required
  • Real-time alarms with additional emailed images
  • ISO Standards compliant
  • Trouble-free operation with automatic checks and continuous component monitoring

Things you need to know

  1. The elevated temperature detected should be confirmed in line with clinical methods recommended by MHRA.
  2. The international standard for non-contact human febrile screening using thermal imaging camera systems: BS (EN) IEC 80601-2-59:2019 PD ISO/TR 13154:2017.
The FDA Enforcement Policy for Telethermographic Systems during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Public Health Emergency: Docket Number: FDA-2020-D-1138.
  3. Human skin temperature varies with environment and physiological factors and doesn’t always accurately reflect internal core temperature. Raised skin temperatures can occur in the absence of fever and vice versa. An elevated facial skin temperature might show a raised body core temperature and, an elevated core temperature might not be accompanied by a raised facial skin temperature. Absence of an elevated skin temperature does not exclude a fever.
  4. Temperature scanning systems are not intended, or designed, to diagnose or detect medical conditions including, but not limited to, viruses or other illnesses. Systems should be used to perform initial body temperature assessment for triage use. An elevated temperature measurement should be confirmed with secondary evaluation methods (e.g. non-contact infrared thermometer (NCIT) or clinical grade contact thermometer.
  5. The system is an accurate scientific system that must be operated strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s Operation Manual.
