When the pandemic started, the UK government recommended everybody work from home where possible. Many organisations were unprepared for this shift in working style and were slow to respond. However, this wasn’t the case for Kingston and Sutton councils, a project they had started in 2017 to review End User computing in their organisation meant that they were ready for the move to remote working.
The project saw them invest in a solution that replaced legacy Windows desktops and laptops with Acer Chromebooks and Chromeboxes accessing a Citrix Virtual Desktop. As they already had the solutions and infrastructure in place when the order came to work from home, they could respond immediately.
[the solution] enabled us to move seamlessly to more than 95% of our staff working remotely without any changes to our infrastructure, which was fantastic.David Grasty
Corporate Head of Digital Transformation
The digital transformation centred around having devices that allowed employees to work anywhere. Kingston and Sutton Councils provided modern technology to 5000 council workers across 114 sites who keep local services operating for a combined 400,000 residents. When coronavirus struck the councils had to support an increase of people working from home, usually around 10 - 20% up to 98%. The combination of centrally-managed Chromebooks and Citrix-delivered virtual desktops meant they could rapidly adapt to the changes. Working with Acer they have been able to invest in flexible and scalable solutions that will leave them well-placed to respond to both immediate and longer-term pressures going forward.
