Today’s mobile lifestyle is changing demands on technology.
Users need flexible, easy-to-use tools to use in a variety of locations and situations; the HP Elite x2 1012 powered by 6th generation Intel® Core™ M processors offers the perfect solution.
IT teams need to provide easy deployment, strong security, and need to ensure that robust systems are in place so that users can access content quicker and easier.
At a first glance, the HP Elite x2 1012 is a stunning device. Housed in a sleek, aircraft-grade aluminium alloy, this hybrid 2-in-1 will compliment your professional style perfectly; however, this is not a case of style over substance. The HP Elite x2 1012 offers high-performance, endless security features, and long-life battery.
Take a look at the HP Elite x2 1012’s impressive key features:
- 12’’ LED display, 8.05mm thick and under 840g
- Aircraft Grade Aluminium Alloy
- Audio by Bang & Olufsen
- Up to 10 hours battery life
- 6th generation Intel® Core™ M processors
- MIL-STD 810G testing for exceptional durability
Aimed at business users, the HP Elite x2 1012 is designed for mobility and collaboration.
With mobility in mind, you’re more likely to damage the device on your travels. HP has equipped the Elite with Corning® Gorilla® Glass 4; a special composition that is applied to electronic displays, to help protect them against sharp contact damage such as asphalt and other real-world surfaces. To put that into perspective, if you drop the device on concrete at a distance of 20 inches, HP claims that it will survive.
All model variants come with an Intel® Core™ M 6th generation Skylake CPU (M3, M5 or M7). We tested the M5 model and it was more than sufficient for general office work and multi-tasking. In benchmark tests, the Core M7 model is almost identical to Intel’s Core i5 CPU, which is considered to be ample-power in the finance and legal industries.
When it comes to storage, expect no less than a 128GB Solid-State Drive (SSD). SSDs are much faster, reliable and resistant to shocks, compared to traditional Hard-Disk Drives (HDDs). HP gives you the option to upgrade to a 256GB or 512GB if necessary. RAM configurations start at 4GB and max out at 8GB. We would have liked to see additional RAM support, which comes in handy for serial multitaskers.
Interface and Connectivity
The HP Elite is equipped with USB-C™ 3.1 with Thunderbolt™, USB-A 3.0, 3.5mm headset/mic jack, and a micro SD slot. This should be ample whilst out of the office; however, if docking is required, this can be achieved via USB 3.0, USB-C™ or Thunderbolt™ accessories. Docking stations will improve the connectivity options available for your device and they can handle 4K displays with no problem.
The basic wireless options feature dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2. The model we are looking at today (Intel Core M5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) features tri-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 with Wi-Gig and LTE support.
Wi-Gig reduces power consumption but offers very high performance (up to 7Gbps transfer rate); however, this is only suitable for short-range use (1-10m).
LTE is a 4G connection, most likely the same data-band your smartphone is using. Simply insert a Micro SIM card with a data plan and you’ll be able to connect to the internet, rather than having to rely on Wi-Fi connections. This option seems to be the most effective and will come in very handy whilst you’re out on the field.
Security and Manageability
Security is paramount when it comes to business and the HP Elite x2 1012 has numerous security options to match your requirements; this includes hassle-free, multi-layered, enterprise-class security and manageability options. These options can be scaled to fit your business and cover every level of security, from data, to user identity, to the physical device itself.
Data Protection – Help keep sensitive information safe with pre-installed HP Client Security, Intel® vPro™, and optional features such as a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and self-encrypting drive (SED).
The TPM is a microchip located on the device, designed to provide extra security with cryptographic functionality. It works with supporting software and firmware to prevent unauthorised access to the HP Elite x2 1012.
Self-encrypting drives protect data using strong encryption, which is particularly useful when the device has been stolen. It would be practically impossible for a data thief to access data on the hard drive when a very strong password is in place.
User Authentication – Take advantage of Windows 10 Pro security features by upgrading to the integrated swiping-style fingerprint reader, which makes logins effortless.
Unfortunately, HP avoided using Windows Hello, which allows sign in to Windows 10 devices using your face, as corporate customers are sceptical of using the technology, mainly due to security reasons. On another note, if you upgrade to the advanced backlit keyboard, you’ll get integrated near field communication (NFC) and a smartcard reader.
Device Serviceability (HP BIOSphere) – Your IT department can remotely access and manage device performance as well as block specific features/settings. For example, if you don’t want employees inserting USB drives into the device, HP BIOSphere can disable access. If this is breached, the IT department will be notified.
HP support looks to be impressive, with offerings of on-site serviceability, global SKU availability, and support across 180 countries. Your device can be seen to wherever you are.
International cover – If you travel abroad and encounter issues with your device, there’s a high chance that your device will be replaced very quickly; this gives the user peace of mind, as they will not have to return to the country they bought it from in order for the device to be replaced.
In-field service – If your device encounters a minor issue whilst out on the field, this can be resolved quickly on-site by HP certified technicians; however, the customer must sign-up to the HP Self-Maintainer program, so that they don’t have to send the device out for service.
Live support – This particular feature is impressive. With any purchase of HP Elite, Premium Support will connect you to a live help desk for internal support from a dedicated team… Better still, it’s available 24/7, 365 days a year!
Whilst testing the device alongside my day-to-day routine, it becomes clear how versatile this product is. For example, whilst writing documents it’s best suited in laptop mode; however, when I want to show my colleagues my screen, I simply switch to tablet mode and carry the device to them.
The fluid process of the 2 in 1 capabilities is met with an interchangeable display mode of Windows 10, as it alters accordingly between laptop/tablet mode. The device body and keyboard simply attach together using strong magnets and this is easily undone by pulling the two apart.
It’s easy to see why the HP x2 1012 is highly desirable in the business world. The hybrid 2-in-1 may even replace your existing laptops as, with high-performance, high-levels of security and prestige support options, the HP Elite x2 is a well-rounded package. Although positioned as a premium device, the price is surprisingly attractive compared to its competition.
