Free BT Wi-Fi vouchers support learning in lockdown

We’re helping to connect disadvantaged children so they can continue learning during lockdown.

We’re offering schools free Wi-Fi vouchers to enable pupils in need to access the internet at home

At BT, we know that being connected is more important than ever. But many children still face difficulties accessing the internet at home. Supporting children’s education in these difficult times is a priority for us, so following our scheme last year we’re once again offering schools free Wi-Fi vouchers to enable pupils in need to access the internet at home.

Schools can apply for a limited number of free Wi-Fi voucher codes to give to their most in-need pupils

We’ve made a substantial number of free Wi-Fi voucher codes available for schools to distribute to pupils aged 16 or under who don’t currently have adequate access to internet connectivity at home.

To help ensure we’re supporting the most in-need pupils across the country, we’ll be allocating vouchers in proportion to the number of pupils at a school who are eligible for free school meals, capped at a maximum of 60 vouchers per school. Please see important note below about estimated BT Wi-Fi coverage for UK households.

How will the Wi-Fi voucher codes work?

Each Wi-Fi voucher code will allow access to the internet on up to three devices at a time, for free, until the end of July 2021. Access will be provided through BT’s network of over 5 million Wi-Fi hotspots around the country and includes comprehensive content filtering.

Once we’ve processed your application, we’ll send all the Wi-Fi voucher codes to your school. You can then hand out the codes to the pupils you think are most in need, along with a useful guide on how to get connected.

Important note:

Although BT Wi-Fi coverage is extensive with over 5 million Wi-Fi hotspots across the UK, it doesn't reach every address so won't be a suitable solution for all pupils. We expect BT Wi-Fi will reach approximately 20% of UK premises. To avoid disappointment, please check that coverage is available at each pupil’s home address before you apply for a code. Simply enter the postcode using our online checker. A 'heat map' will be shown using colours to denote hotspot density in the postcode area. Red shows areas with the best chance of connection (though this is not guaranteed), whereas green shows a lower chance. Areas on the map where no colour is shown, means there is no hotspot coverage.

How can my school apply for free Wi-Fi codes?

State funded schools in England, Wales and Scotland can apply directly to BT for free Wi-Fi voucher codes up to a maximum of 60 per school. Schools in Northern Ireland can apply through the C2kExchange and these free vouchers be will allocated by the Education Authority. We’re not able to offer this service to independent schools or academic networks.  We can only accept applications from schools and not directly from pupils, parents or guardians.

Here’s how to apply.

1

Decide how many Wi-Fi voucher codes you need

Free Wi-Fi voucher codes offer a great opportunity to get children online who don’t currently have any other provision. To help us support as many schools as possible, please apply only for the number of codes you need up to a maximum of 60 per school.

2

Check that BT Wi-Fi coverage is available

The free Wi-Fi voucher code will only work if there’s BT Wi-Fi coverage at the address where it will be used. To avoid disappointment, please check coverage for your pupil’s home address before you apply for a voucher code. If you find that an individual pupil is unable to connect to a hotspot, you can re-issue that voucher code to another pupil.

3

Complete our online application form

We can only accept applications from individual schools and not Multi-Academy Trusts. If you are a representative from a school, applying from an official school email address, please click "apply now" to complete our simple form.

Important note: The email address you use to apply must be a school email address (not a personal email address like hotmail, gmail, yahoo etc). We're not able to accept applications from individual pupils, parents or guardians - these applications won't be processed. Parents/guardians interested in this scheme should talk to their child’s school.

Can we keep in touch?

BT has a dedicated education practice entirely focused on supporting schools and colleges like you. From time to time, we'd like to send you relevant updates by email about how to get the best from technology to support education.

4

We’ll email you with all the Wi-Fi voucher codes

Once your application is successfully processed, we’ll send all the voucher codes to your school by email. What you'll actually get is a unique username and password for each child which will allow log-in to BT's Wi-Fi hotspot network. We’ll also provide a handy “get started guide” to explain how to get online quickly.

5

School distributes Wi-Fi voucher codes and guide to pupils

The final step is for the school to provide the unique log-in details (Wi-Fi username and password) along with a copy of the “get started guide” to each of their most in need children. It’s really important that you send each child a copy of the “get started guide” so they can follow the set-up process step by step. If all the steps aren’t followed in the right order, your student may experience unnecessary technical issues. The guide contains the handy video below, along with lots of other useful information.

Prefer the “get started guide” as a PDF?
If you'd like to print out the guide, then just open and print this “PDF” version.
