Write a review for the Linksys Wireless-N BT ADSL2 Modem/Router here!
This was a replacement for a previous Linksys wireless modem; Wow what a difference. We have 2 laptops, 1 PS3 connected wirelessly and one PC connected directly by cable. The setup follows the Linksys standard and is pretty straight forward, all the necessary cables & filter come in the box so it's ready to go. The wireless side of things is superb, with no connection issues at all. There is no comparing this with my old one, the signal is excellant and is a big improvement. If you need a easy bit of kit for home, you can't go wrong, it even runs much cooler than the last one. Oh & Dabs has super delivery as usual - well done Dabs.
Really pleased with this wireless router. I have a long and noisy phone line that many adsl routers / modems have trouble with, but the WAG160N achieves a high sync speed and is extremely stable.
The other benefit that I was surprised to see is *much* better wireless coverage compared to my old Netgear DG834G, and that's only using existing "G" access points.
The only negatives I can think of is, I am surprised that device doesn't show you the line noise figures, only the sync speed. And it does run *extremely* hot, which isn't a problem, just surprising how hot it gets.
OK - I'm new to setting up a network so expected it would take some time to get this up and running. It says on the box "Easy to set-up and running in minutes with Linksys EasyLinkAdvisor (LELA) - No Chance, more like days!! Installed the WAG160N following the instructions, no connection, so read the user manual - not first time user friendly. By a process of elimination it turned out that the Microfilter and phone cable supplied did not work! Replaced them with a spare from an old modem and we get connected. Installed a WUSB300N USB Network Adapter (bundle from DABS) on my laptop. Managed to connect them over the network but not able to share files or access internet. Linksys knowledgebase not much use, they have discontinued e-mail help and the 0800 helpline not a lot of use. In the end I downloaded a free trial of Network Magic and was up and running with file share and Internet within 10 minutes.
Have had to return mine, it was not working properly on my ADSL Line, it worked, but at a greatly reduced speed when compared to my old router.
Linksys support have been excellent, online chat, and followed up by phoning me straight back, but all to no avail. So i've just sent it back.
Otherwise, setup was simple, wireless speed excellent.
I just had a dud I guess.
The is a great looking router and the wired functions work perfectly well.
However, when it comes to the wireless functions there are major problems. The DHCP server tends to fail to assign IP addresses when a wireless client reboots - so no network availablity. If you use a fixed IP address to get round it, the file and printer sharing fails to work - clients cannot see each other. There are lots of comments to this effect on the Linksys forums, but Linksys is silent on what, if anything, they intend to do about it. User comments that are critical of the product are deleted.
If you want a wireless function, avoid this router.
awful
This looks like a pretty router with no external aerials, but that is pretty much where the niceties end. Setup is painless enough, but out of four wireless computers in the house - including a PS3 - only one was able to get a wireless connection for any workable length of time.
I have setup many wireless networks and am a software developer by trade, so its nothing to do with computer illiteracy! Tried new drivers for all the modems etc, but to no avail. Ethernet connection was fine, but wireless useless.
Gone back to my old and intermittent Netgear for now before I can buy a new Netgear once this has been returned!
