Description
The AXIS 212 PTZ Network Camera for cost-efficient and reliable indoor surveillance, offers instant one-click pan/tilt/zoom control with digital PTZ. The built-in two-way audio support enables remote users to not only view, but also listen in on an area and communicate orders or requests to visitors or intruders.
The AXIS 212 PTZ incorporates a high-quality 3 Megapixel sensor and a wide-angle lens that allows the user to instantly zoom in on small or distant objects with exceptional clarity. This compact and discreet camera is ideal for monitoring shops, receptions, banks and other facilities where you need zoom in for detailed inspections.
With no moving parts exposed to regular wear and tear, the camera is ideal for automatic patrolling. It also provides effective protection against tampering as no parts can be forcibly moved.
Support for Power over Ethernet allows the camera to receive both data and power over a single Ethernet cable - which makes the installation easier and cheaper. If connected to a central Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), the camera can continue to operate even when there is a power failure.

Full overview and instant zoom - yet no moving parts
Conventional PTZ cameras allow the user to pan, tilt and zoom, but not to see the whole video scene - just one portion at a time. The AXIS 212 PTZ gives the user the whole picture, and then allows instant pan/tilt/zoom to get the details. -
Instant pan/tilt/zoom
The 3x zoom provides instant, one-click optical zoom functionality. Consequently, from the overview image, a security officer can zoom in 3 times on any suspicious behavior by just clicking on the part of the image where it's happening. No other PTZ camera can zoom in instantly on off-centered action. And since there is no movement in the lens system, the camera instantly changes the field of view. -
No moving parts
The AXIS 212 PTZ achieves full overview as well as instant pan/tilt/zoom without any moving parts, which means no wear and tear. This unique feature is based on two determining factors - a wide-angle lens combined with a 3-megapixel sensor utilization of the full "windowing" possibilities: the camera captures predetermined sections of the overview without mechanical motion. -
Resolution - sharp and maintained
By having a full overview of 140° (pan), the AXIS 212 PTZ wastes no pixels. This means that the full image sensor can be used for image quality purposes - and the difference is astonishing. The AXIS 212 PTZ offers progressive scan and advanced signal processing based on a 3-megapixel CMOS sensor. The AXIS 212 PTZ is able to efficiently "window" a specific portion of the 3-megapixel sensor grid. In doing so, the camera filters out unnecessary information that offloads your network and storage capacity, and lets you capture a well-defined "image concentrate".

Has desirable features
Reviewed by David Smith. Review Posted 28/03/2008
For the price of the camera, it is really good. The fish eye lens is exceptional in monitoring the area it is intended to. The built-in microphone is very, very small and you can still hear what people are saying to an extent, considering it's size. The outer case provides very good protection.
The negative points are that this particular model from the Axis series is very particular about the lighting conditions (it doesn't work as well in poor or excess light as the other cameras). There is also a backbox on an angle which allows the camera to be physically tilted, although you can't rotate the image to actually fit in with the position.
All in all, a good camera and we'll probably buy more of these, although maybe not as many due to some areas having undesirable light conditions.
