Serial ATA (or SATA) has been designed as a replacement for the existing 40 way IDE cable, the SATA connector and cable are smaller (which improves air circulation), with a reduced operating voltage and pin amount (7 as opposed to 40), the current data transfer rate is ATA-150 (1.5Gbps).

Powers my new SATA hard disk fine, but a warning to other owners of Dell Dimension 5100's and other computers with hard disk trays near the case: The cable sticks out a good few centimetres - I can't put the case back together as this cable is in the way.

Great little cable. Works perfectly. Don't waste your money on more expensive cables when this one does the job!

Caution Dell Dimension E520 owners

As noted by Dan, the cable functions electrically perfectly well and is good value. However, I also ran into the problem with closing the side panel , but this was on a Dell Dimension E520. Dell use a right-angle cable for their pre-fitted drive.
