Common network problems
  • Wi-Fi that doesn’t reach all the areas required
If your students can’t get access to the internet across your campus, you're restricting the anytime, anywhere learning that mobile and portable devices promote.
  • Control over what is accessed on the internet at school
As devices become more commonplace, the need for security and safeguarding of them, especially in a learning environment becomes ever more important.
  • Wi-Fi traffic management in densely used areas
Being able to control which areas need faster access, redistributing resources and controlling the bandwidth certain areas are using will help to ensure the right areas get the access they need, when they need it.
  • Needing separate secure networks
Allowing different levels of access and permissions for staff, visitors and students is key to ensuring your network is safe and secure.
  • Scalability to handle volume of school and pupil-owned devices
With the increase in number of 1:1 strategies and BYOD programmes being adopted in schools, the issue of scalability is a problem on the rise.

Why Consider a “Managed” Wireless system?

Wireless LAN or “Wi-Fi” is everywhere – it’s used every day for our smartphones, laptops, tablets and now, even home multimedia. Wireless LAN provides convenience, flexibility and freedom. But with today’s expectation that it be widespread added to the volume of use, it’s become ever more important to control, monitor and optimise performance.

The 3 key principles of DrayTek Wireless Management:

Mobility

DrayTek provides a single Wi-Fi network across multiple access points. Enabling your students and staff to log on in one part of the network, then move throughout without losing their connection.
Install DrayTek access points in optimum locations and you can manage them all centrally. Ensure coverage across your whole site without worrying about your people being able to get online.

Cost Effectiveness

Management functionality is already built into DrayTek business class routers. Even better, the DrayTek solution includes a range of managed wireless access points to suit the budget and environment it’s needed in – so you can be sure there’s a solution that’ll work for you.
Get a zero/low cost wireless controller. Managed wireless is built into DrayTek’s standard routers (Vigor 2860 and 2925). No need for additional hardware, software, licensing or a specialised controller.

Simplicity

In both provision and ongoing management. With DrayTek, a network administrator can configure an access point to the needed spec just once. Then using the provisioning tool, it can be uploaded to multiple devices. Any troubleshooting or needed changes can then be made from a central controller.
It's also really easy to manage your network with a simple, yet thorough set of reporting tools including traffic graphs, AP status, station lists and an AP map.

Additional Key Benefits

Security

Security and authentication are always a key feature with DrayTek routers. Their built-in firewall protects against attacks including Denial of Service and IP-based attacks, as well as access by unauthorised remote systems. Your wireless, Ethernet and VPN are also protected by various systems.

On top of this, the latest ('Version 3') DrayTek object-based firewall gives you even more flexibility. You can create combinations of users, rules and restrictions to suit your learning environment – making it truly bespoke to your school’s needs.

The Vigor 2860 now also allows selective direction firewall rules of LAN to WAN, WAN to LAN or LAN to VPN. Added to this, you’re now able to apply Quality of Service Assurance selectively, to specific users.

Traffic Management

DrayTek’s wireless LAN management allows you to ‘load balance’ your wireless traffic by setting maximum capacities for each access point (AP). This can be done either by the number of active users or by current traffic levels.

Worried that’d mean some people not getting access? Don’t be. For high numbers of users, traffic is equally balanced across all your available access points to provide optimum performance.

Auto-provision

For ease of deployment, a pre-set configuration can be enabled so that when you add any new access points, as your network grows, it’s a simple process to configure them to fit your existing system.

Interference control

To help your school avoid interference from other local access points. In areas with a large number of local businesses or homes, many Wi-Fi networks can be visible and that often causes interference. Using DrayTek’s dual band capability (AP0900 and AP910c) models, interference can be greatly reduced, which will help you to have high performance throughout your network.

Managed Wireless in your learning environment
To implement a managed wireless solution from DrayTek, you’ll need a wireless controller to manage and configure the network. This will connect to your access points (up to 20), which you can install in required places throughout your academic organisation.

Managing up to 20 access points

The management interface of the DrayTek Managed Wireless system is built into their Vigor 2860 series routers.
This included management service makes the DrayTek solution really cost-effective. With the no cost implication for service activation or “per node” licencing as it’s already in the standard device firmware.
The Vigor 2860 can be used solely as a Managed Wireless Controller device. However, because they’re also business-class routers, they can also be used as a gateway device to the internet.

Access Points

There are three access points currently available in the DrayTek Management Wireless family. They each offer different levels of functionality and form factor. All of the products can be mixed and matched within a single Wi-Fi network according to your requirements.

AP-910C
A Power over Ethernet (PoE) device*, these access points can be ceiling or wall-mounted. Designed to look similar to a smoke alarm, they support 802.11ac wireless. The AP-910C is ideal for use in public areas of your school.

AP-902
A PoE device that supports simultaneous dual-band wireless-n. It has a 5 port dual LAN Gigabit Ethernet Switch as well as a USB port for an optional thermometer.

AP-810
A PoE device that supports wireless-n. With 4 Ethernet LAN ports, this access point provides all the basic features required for your network.

*Power over Ethernet is a technology for wired Ethernet LANs. It enables the electric current needed to operate the device to be carried by data cables, not power cords. This helps to reduce the number of wires that need to be strung to install a network.

Central Management Systems

VigorACS SI
Manage your large access points estates. For campus environments such as colleges, academies and secondary schools with multiple remote offices there may be the need for central control of more than 20 access points in many locations. Your system integrators can manage your DrayTek devices and easily add and maintain them for the future. Not only can this be convenient if you are still growing your network, but it will also enable you to manage your network in a more cost-effective manner.
