Does exactly what it says

The first thing I suggest you do is upgrade the firmware to v2.x - Its far better with this version. Have had this running for about 10 months without problems, access remotely for config changes and using VPN with Netgears VPN Client. Only issue is the web site blocking feature does cause the device to slow down network traffice both on local network and internet, so if you dont need this feature turn it off. Only thing that could improve this product is to have 10/100/1000 network support. When I did need support, the service was good and they where only to keen to assist even sending through updates that weren't on the website.

VPN Support - be careful!
Reviewed by Kenny. Review Posted 05/09/2008
Purchased one of these specifically for the VPN support so that I could remotely connect into my network from anywhere. I assumed, wrongly as it turned out, that it would work with the built in Windows VPN client. In fact, you need to purchase NetGears own VPN client software. Even most furstratingly, this software is not available for download purchase and they don't include a demo version in the box with their product - so I now have to wait for a second delivery before I can get this working!

if only it worked reliably...

On the face of it, this is a great little device - combining everything you need to connect remote office sites or homeworkers to an office network.
Set-up was relatively painless with a good mix of wizards and ability to simply specify what you want. A little bit irritating that some changes need a router reboot - which is always a worry when the firewall is at a remote site - also, unlike Cisco, changes are saved as you apply them, so no easy reboot option if you mess-up.
The biggest problem however is stability followed by useless Netgear support. I made the mistake of buying several of these devices, and the longest up-time is around 6 days! To make matters worse, about 10% of the time the lettings get lost or corrupted upon power cycling. Netgear support suggest upgrading fireware, downgrading fireware, disabling features, and then repeat themselves, none of which works. Certainly not using Netgear again!
